MEET HERCULES!

Hercules is the kind of guy we love here at ARL - a big headed crusty former tom cat. He came to us through our Communy Cat Program and will need a slow transition into your home. To help Hercules acclimate to a new home, we have some recommendations:

WHAT TO EXPECT
*Hiding: while he is acclimating to his new home, we highly recommend confinement to a cage for a short period of time. This way he can learn about his new surroundings but still feel secure in the crate. This will also eliminate the worry of “losing them” in your home.
*Transition: moving to a new environment can be scary, and a potential backslide in behavior is to be expected. If they purred here at the shelter, they will purr again in your home but it may take some time. Be patient while they learn the new sounds, and smells of your home.
*Hands-On Work at Home: It is important to work with your new cat multiple times a day. Find wet food that your kitty loves and pet them while they are eating. If petting is too scary, feed them by hand first, so they quickly learn that hands are not a scary thing. Pairing yummy food with handling is the quickest way to teach an under-socialize cat that petting is a good thing and it can really get that purr engine running!
Additionally, if you have another cat at home who is cat-friendly, they can help insecure cats feel more comfortable and less overwhelmed while your new friend adjusts to life in their new home.

Hercules is currently up to date on vaccinations and flea and tick preventative, has been spayed, microchipped and examined by our vet team.

We welcome adopters from NH, RI, CT, and NY. However, we will be unable to facilitate same day adoptions due to state regulated paperwork requirements.
