Description: I am a spayed female, tab mackrl and brown Domestic Shorthair.
Age: The shelter staff think I am about 6 years old.

MEET DANI!
Dani is a friendly tabby whose owners couldn't keep her due to changes in their household. Dani has a condition called cerebellar hyperplasia ("CH"), which affects her balance and gives her a wobbly gait. CH isn't painful or progressive, but her new family should be ready to make some simple accomodations for Dani. For example, she may have trouble with stairs and will need a litter box with low sides. She finds lively toddlers to be scary, so a home with adults and teens would be best. When you meet Dani, you'll see how much love she has to offer and, we hope, overlook her wobble. Come to see Dani in Dedham!
Dani is currently up to date on all vaccines, spayed/neutered, microchipped, and has been seen by our veterinarian.

This patient is most likely affected by a condition known as cerebellar hypoplasia. The cerebellum is the part of the brain primarily responsible for balance. Cerebellar hypoplasia is the medical terminology to say that the cerebellum is not fully formed.
The most common cause of cerebellar hypoplasia is maternal infection with a virus called panleukopenia. If this patient's mother was infected with panleukopenia while pregnant, the virus could have impacted the development of her kitten's brain, though her kittens will not actively have the virus.
The symptoms of cerebellar hypoplasia are related to having impaired balance. Affected kittens may have an ataxic, or wobbly, gait in their hind end; they may stumble more than normal, and may just overall seem a bit clumsy. Often as they age the symptoms lessen as the brain compensates for the diminished cerebellum.
Affected kittens can range widely in how severe their symptoms are. As a family adopting a kitten with cerebellar hypoplasia, you will need to monitor your cat's limitations so that they do not get injured due to clumsiness. It will also be important to consider your cat's abilities when selecting and placing his litter box, food dish, and water bowl in the house.
