Located At: Burbank Animal Shelter
Description: My name is Dora.
I am a spayed female, tan and black German Shepherd Dog.

Age: The shelter staff think I am about 4 years old.
More Info: I have been at the shelter since Aug 04, 2025.

Meet Dora!
Dora is a beautiful 3-year-old German Shepherd who came to the shelter with two other Shepherds. She warmed up to the volunteers right away and quickly showed her gentle, affectionate nature. Dora loves to give as much love as she gets, and her constant smile makes her even more endearing.
This gorgeous girl has the cutest floppy ears that bounce like little wings when she walks, a detail that perfectly matches her sweet and playful spirit. Recently, she and her brother Dozer went on a hike and were absolute champs tackling the trails. Dora clearly loves being outdoors, taking in every sound and scent of nature.
She’s just as happy to trot around the yard and explore as she is to lie down and relax by your side. Despite whatever challenges she’s faced with her Shepherd family, Dora always seems to wear that bright, happy smile. She’s a lovely, positive, and truly beautiful girl inside and out.
If you think Dora might be the perfect match for you, stop by the Burbank Animal Shelter and let her win your heart in person.

from Dora's Day Hike

Completed the day hike, and Dora did great. She wants to play with every dog she sees, which necessitates a respectful distance. Therefore, there were 0 incidents. She likes people and is indifferent to cyclists. Like most dogs, she's nervous when it's too loud (sanitation trucks, street sweepers, etc), but stopping and petting seems to help.

She wore the 'Adopt Me' vest, and 3 people stopped me to inquire about her (a new record).

She is aggressively shedding her winter coat, so Leslie helped me give her a bath. She did not want to get in the tub, but once she was in, she handled her bath like a champ!
5/12 from her day hike:

Dora and I had a great morning. Since returning to the shelter and flying solo without her compatriots, she seems extra sensitive to loud noises, crowds, and unfamiliar spaces. It was gardening day on the bike path (lawn mower, edgers, and leaf blowers). Coupled with the busy time of the day (lots of people and dogs and bikes and BS), it was a bit too much for her, so we ditched the busy path and opted for a quiet side street. Dora quickly relaxed, stopped circling, and fell into a nice rhythm. We stopped several times to chat with folks. I ran into Peggy walking her dog, and Dora was fine with 10+ feet of space while we talked. In fact, Dora wasn't reactive to any dogs her size, but she did have a few choice words for the little, angry pups.

Dora is a phenomenal dog who needs a little extra love and affection. She's a polite, dignified lady and will make a wonderful companion for the right human.

Today, Dora indeed was the Explorer!

We had an amazing Day Hike this morning. We went to Johnny Carson Park in Burbank. The first thing Dora took in, one paw at a time, was the grass! Ohhh, the fresh cut grass smells! You could tell that walking on the spongy grass was the best feeling for her. She definitely preferred it over the dirt paths. I certainly don't blame her. So many wonderful grassy places for her to walk on and sniff. I let her lead the way and take as much time exploring as she wanted, her floppy ears flapping. We ran into three different pairs of dogs being walked in the park. I kept my calm with her as usual, and if she began to get a little leash reactive and do her anxious tail spins, I would say to her, "Okay, let's go." And we would start walking slowly in the opposite direction, giving the dogs plenty of distance. She did amazing with this, and it really goes to show that she mirrors whatever energy you are feeling. It's important to stay calm so she knows we are safe and this is fine. No big deal. Give everyone their space. I also appreciated the many moments Dora would check in with me to see how I was doing. Looking up with her beautiful brown eyes, lean into my legs, and give a big, open smile. She's such a considerate friend.

We explored some little mini forests and creeks that surrounded the park, and this really brought joy to Dora's face. I could tell that being there lifted her spirits, and I was so grateful to be there for her today. She even had curiosity for the squirrels and crows. What were these smaller creatures up to? I must go see and sniff! We took a water break halfway through our exploration and looked around to see where we hadn't investigated yet. Dora also took this nice opportunity to lie in the grass. She really was thrilled about that park and the grass. This was my goal when taking her out. A nice day out to enjoy the grass and decompress from the usual animal shelter routine. There's a whole world out there for Dora to explore!

When our time was up to head back to the Animal Shelter, Dora took a nice nap in the back seat of the car. So she clearly had a smashing good time and was ready to eat her breakfast immediately when returning to her kennel.

Overall, bridges were crossed by Dora today, and that's not only the ones they had at the park. This outing did so much for her, and more will benefit her greatly in the near future.

What a truly wonderful girl who had her day at the park.

Until next time,

Karah Britton
