Meet Arthur: A Sweet Senior Soul Ready for His Forever Home
Arthur has been waiting over six months for his forever home, and this sweet little guy truly deserves his chance.
When Arthur first arrived at the shelter, he was in such poor condition that we thought he was around 11 years old. After some time in foster care, he was re-aged to about 7, and what a transformation he has had! It’s clear that Arthur didn’t get the care or attention he deserved during the first 7 years of his life. He is now learning what it means to be a dog who is safe, loved, pampered, and allowed to simply enjoy life. And watching his personality come out has been so rewarding.
Arthur isn't perfect, and he does have a few specific needs, but his wonderful qualities far outweigh the things he’s still working on. Once he has the right environment, Arthur is an incredibly easy dog to have around the house. He is loving, loyal, funny, and so deserving of someone who will give him the life he should have had all along!
What Makes Arthur So Special
100% house-trained: Arthur has not had a single accident.
An easy housemate: He can be left alone for up to 8 hours without being destructive or having accidents.
Treat motivated: Arthur isn't picky about food and will happily work for treats.
A routine-loving guy: Once he has time to settle in, he picks up on household routines really well.
A late sleeper: No early-morning wake-up calls from Arthur! He loves sleeping in and won't bark to get you out of bed.
Cat friendly: Arthur has lived with a cat and has generally done well. His foster cat isn't friendly and swats at him, and Arthur has recently started reacting back.
Dog friendly: Arthur previously lived with a female dog and has done well with dogs his size in another temporary foster home.
A good traveler: He rides well in the car. He does need a little boost getting into the SUV, and he seems to have some joint discomfort when jumping down.
Loving once he trusts you: Arthur can take some time to settle in, but once he feels safe, he is incredibly sweet and loyal.
He's discovering his goofy side: One of the best parts of fostering Arthur has been watching him learn how to play. He absolutely loves his indoor ball!
Blanket connoisseur: Arthur loves his blankets and makes sure they are arranged just right before settling down for the night.
Arthur's Ideal Home
Arthur's biggest need is a quiet, peaceful environment. He is currently living in an apartment in Uptown Charlotte, and while he does perfectly well in the apartment itself, the busy city environment has been difficult for him. The noise, people, other dogs, elevators, and constant activity can be overwhelming, and he has become reactive to dogs and people while on leash.
A home in a quiet neighborhood with a fenced backyard would be a dream for Arthur. Instead of navigating elevators and busy sidewalks every time he needs to go outside, he could simply wander into his yard, sniff around, and enjoy some peace and quiet.
Arthur has also been working with a professional trainer on his leash skills, and he has made a lot of progress! His trainer has generously offered to continue working with Arthur's adopter at no cost.
Please don't let his leash reactivity scare you away. I want to be completely honest about his needs because his adopter will need to understand that Arthur needs structure and shouldn't be allowed to approach unfamiliar people or dogs on walks when he is feeling overwhelmed. With the right environment and continued training, he is absolutely capable of continuing to improve.
Arthur Needs a Kid-Free Home
Arthur needs a home with no children under 12. He has been around toddlers, and unfortunately, he found them frightening. It seems like he simply hasn't had much exposure to small children and doesn't understand their unpredictable movements. He does not enjoy being tugged on, leaned on, or handled roughly. For this reason, an adult home, or a home with older, respectful children is the safest and best fit for him.
Arthur's Glow-Up
Arthur's physical transformation has been incredible. When he arrived at the shelter, he was covered in itchy, yeasty skin and had a double ear infection and significant hair loss. After months of medicated baths and proper care, he is now yeast-free, his skin is dramatically healthier, and his hair is growing back. He no longer needs his medicated baths, and he looks, feels, and smells so much better!
He does still struggle with itchy skin, and we suspect allergies are the culprit. Daily Apoquel has made a significant difference in his comfort. His adopter will need to be committed to continuing his veterinary care, keeping him comfortable, and working with a vet to determine the best long-term solution for his allergies.
Arthur Has Been Waiting Long Enough
Arthur has spent more than six months learning how wonderful life can be. He has learned household routines, discovered toys, figured out that blankets are meant to be cozy, and most importantly, learned how wonderful it feels to be loved.
He may need a little more understanding than some dogs, but he gives so much in return. He is a sweet, goofy, loyal little guy who just wants a quiet place to call home and a person he can trust. I truly believe the right person is going to wonder how they ever lived without him.
Arthur has already waited six months. Please don't let his quirks keep you from meeting him. He deserves someone willing to see the wonderful dog underneath everything he's been through. Give this little guy a chance. You might just be the person he's been waiting for!
