Significant medical needs. RESCUE ONLY
Summarized Medical Condition and Findings:
Goldie is a young puppy suffering from significant neurological and mobility impairments, suspected to be the result of previous trauma. The exact cause and extent of his injuries remain undetermined.
Veterinary radiographs identified a slight abnormality near the T12–T13 vertebrae, raising concerns about possible spinal trauma. Neurological examinations revealed impaired coordination, weakness in multiple limbs, and abnormal proprioceptive responses, including absent conscious proprioception in the right rear limb.
Although Goldie demonstrated some improvement during veterinary hospitalization, including briefly standing and taking steps independently, **since returning to shelter care, he remains unable to walk independently and requires assistance with mobility.** His limbs do not appear to coordinate properly, placing him at risk of falling and sustaining additional injuries.
**Goldie also exhibits signs of possible fecal incontinence.** Veterinary staff documented episodes of bowel movements occurring without apparent awareness. Since returning to shelter care, he continues to pass stool without appearing able to voluntarily control his bowel movements. His ability to consistently control urination also remains uncertain.
Additional medical concerns include:
- Previous urine scalding and skin irritation around the inner thighs and abdomen.
- Healing pressure sores on his rear paws, likely associated with prolonged immobility.
- History of dehydration, underweight body condition, and poor hygiene upon intake.
- Mild anemia and elevated white blood cell count identified during initial testing.
- Ear infection requiring treatment and continued maintenance.
Current Medical Needs:
Goldie requires a substantially higher level of care than a typical shelter puppy due to his neurological impairments and limited mobility.
His ongoing care includes:
- **Mobility assistance:** Physical support for standing, movement, feeding, and elimination as needed.
- **Incontinence management:** Frequent
Shelter veterinarian recommended physical therapy and referral to specialist for further evaluation and care. **Pet cannot ambulate on his own** Uknown if pet will ever recover. May require months of recovery care or may not recover at all.
