When adopting a working cat, we strongly recommend that the cat be kept confined for the first 6-12 weeks. This may be an extra large wire crate in the barn they'll be living in, or having access to the outdoors removed at first. The reason this is so important is to give the cat time to acclimate to their new surroundings. All the smells, sounds, and sights of a new place can be overwhelming, and if a cat is given the opportunity, it will try to find its way to its home territory. Giving your new working cat time to adjust and become accustomed to their new home will greatly benefit your new employee!
