Name: Tagalong
Animal ID: A844942
Weight: 80.50
About: If you’re a fan if Girl Scout cookies, you know nothing beats a Tagalong! Ok, ok- we know Thin Mints are popular, but they definitely take a back seat- especially to this sweet pup!! Tagalong lived in a home for about a year and half before being surrendered to the shelter. He reportedly did well with another resident dog and with kids (though he may do best in a home with older kiddos).
After finding himself at risk in the overcrowded shelter, Tagalong spent four months in a loving foster home. Here’s what we learned:
• He did well with a six year old child
• He learned to “sit” and “wait” for his food
• He is housebroken and working on crate training
• He enjoys bully sticks and Nylabones
• He is sweet and affectionate
“Tagalong is a very good dog for someone who is young and active because of his size. He can be with other dogs similar size and also gets along with small dogs. He saw our guinea pigs and birds and was curious about them but non- reactive. He is very sweet and affectionate and tends to gravitate to men. He is very sweet and looks up to you for guidance. He is food motivated so he is trainable. He will wait for his food if you give him the stop sign and then tell him ‘Go’.”
Here’s what volunteers at the shelter said:
“Tagalong is a big sweetie! He was nervous when we first met him at his kennel but was easy to leash up. Once we got to the play yard he wandered around and kept to himself for the first few minutes, but then backed his butt up to me as I was petting his kennelmate, which I took us an invitation to scratch. After that, we quickly became BFFs. Treats helped! He was snuggly, affectionate, and wanted to be by my side for much of the rest of our time in the yard. He just needs his people to take it slow and take his lead. Good boy!”
“Tagalong is as sweet as the cookies! We took him and his kennelmate to a yard few times and he was friendly. Easy to leash and not reactive to other dogs. He was attentive on our short walk to the yard and he enjoyed cuddling. He’s a chill guy and will make a great family member.”
“Tagalong was easy to leash and leave the kennel area with. He walked well, didn’t pull much, and was very independent on our walk. I stopped out by the park and knelt down to his level. He did turn around and approach me, stopping where his back end was in front of me. I gave him some soft, calm butt scratches that he seemed very content about, while watching what was happening in the park. The rest of our walk was nice, he is a calm boy.”
Tagalong sometimes needs a minute to warm up to new folks, but once he does, he’s all love! He’s been social and easygoing when meeting other dogs in playgroup. Ask to meet Tagalong today!!
Available for long term foster care 30+ days or adoption through PACC.
Adoption Process:
Interested parties:
BOTH Must visit PACC before the 3:00 PM March 8th, 2025 deadline to meet with an adoption or foster counselor who will go over notes and then introduce you to ensure that it’s a good fit.
Please Note: Tagalong CANNOT go to a foster home with other dogs!
Home Management Plan
1) Bite History:
• minor bite- victim was trying to scan dog for MC, bit hand
• minor bite- victim was a clinic tech trying to get dog out of a clinic kennel, bit finger
2) Under socialized Behavior:
• Will take time to adjust and decompress in a home environment.
• May do best in a home with a confident dog.
• Go slow and do not force handling, it will take time for them to become affectionate.
VS
3) Stranger Danger/People Selective:
• May need 2+ week decompression in home.
• Slow introductions to any new people or guests, recommend muzzle for introductions.
• Put in a separate space (crate/room/etc) when guests come over.
• Do not walk in busy areas/move away from people in pathways.
• Recommend muzzle training
4) Children Caution: given his behavior he might do better in a home with no kids or older kids who can respect a dog's space and warnings
• Go slow when handling, do not force due to potential to fear bite/discomfort handling.
• Do not leave children unattended with dog, do not allow rough housing or grabbing at dog.
• Recommend crate training. (see handout)
• Keep draglines on minimum of two weeks.
5) Containment Issues: seen in previous home, squeezed through wrought iron fence, needs a secure yard
• Dragline needs to remain on for 2 weeks (to change out, clip new leash to collar before removing old leash)
• Hold leash in outdoor areas until 100% comfortable
• Monitor any outside time.
6) Resource Guards Food/Toys (from dogs): In foster home Tagalong initiated an altercation with resident dog when they walked by the room where treats are kept. It was also noted by foster in prior to this which is why treats were in a separate room.
• Feed your new dog at set times. Do NOT free feed.
• Feed in separate SAFE spaces where dogs cannot access each other. (recommend feeding in kennels or separate enclosed rooms)
• Do NOT give treats to both dogs side by side. Treat time should be separate.
• Train drop it and leave it behaviors.
