I am a spayed female, black and brown German Shepherd Dog and Rottweiler.
Age: The shelter staff think I am about 2 years and 9 months old.
Found At: I was found at Vine St
More Info: I have been at the shelter since Nov 07, 2024.
SHIRLEY (A1362440) was placed on final on 07/31/2025.
Summary of Behavior:
Shirley is a very shy and fearful dog who consistently refuses to walk or leave her kennel with unfamiliar handlers, often freezing and needing to be physically moved. Outside the kennel, she hides behind objects and displays stiff body posture but allows full invasive handling without aggression. She tenses when picked up but does not show any snapping or biting behavior.
Shirley is more affiliative and willing to walk with familiar handlers and engages well in mild play with other dogs. Despite a three-month foster placement, she remained timid and fearful, often cowering and refusing walks. She continues to exhibit timid behavior both in foster care and the shelter, showing limited progress off behavior medication.
Due to her ongoing fearfulness, lack of behavioral improvement, and quality of life, Shirley is being placed on final for 08/05/25.
Path Forward:
Rescue or Adopter must commit and *pull* Shirley by 5 PM on 08/05/2025, or Shirley will be humanely euthanized. Rescue or Adopter will also need to have a waiver signed and submitted prior to leaving with the dog.
****SHIRLEY IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR FOSTER. RESCUE OR ADOPTION ONLY****
EXTENSION REQUEST PROCESS:
A Rescue Group (RG) may request an extension of an animal’s Needs Rescue Final Date no later than 10:00 a.m. on the noted ‘final date’ via email to the SJRescue@sanjoseca.gov with a cc to a Division Manager or Shelter Operations Supervisor.
Extension requests must be from the RG interested in in the animal, include specific information as to delays in rescue commitment, specific care arrangements, or other time-based mitigating factors that warrant an extension. A one-time extension up to 72-hour may be granted to accommodate RG, but are not guaranteed based on capacity or condition or other constraints.
