Bio: Little Miss Tessa came to Longmeadow with another pony after her owner passed away. As she settled into life at the Ranch and was introduced to the other horses after her routine quarantine ended, she quickly made friends with both her equine companions and the people who cared for her. Before we knew it, she was ready to be evaluated by our trainers.

Upon evaluation, our trainers found that Tessa knew certain cues that made them suspect she had a history of training under saddle. Our head trainer believed, however, that enough time had passed since Tessa's previous training that a restart was necessary. Fast forward to today, and Tessa is now being ridden at the walk and trot in our indoor arena, on the trails, and around the ranch, and is doing very well! At times she can get impatient when her rider is mounting or when asked to halt under saddle. This pony likes to move! We think Tessa would excel with a confident intermediate rider who can continue reinforcing that patience is a virtue.

Tessa has become a favorite mount in our Little Riders program and has also been used for pony rides. She is patient, has excellent ground manners, and gives young children the opportunity to build confidence while learning grooming and tacking skills. Our Little Riders lessons are always conducted on a leadline, and Tessa is a safe, dependable partner for balance exercises and fun games from her back.

While Tessa enjoys helping teach our youngest riders, she also appreciates a break from the lesson program. She loves heading out on the trails and being ridden around the ranch. She would also make a wonderful pony for a family who wants to pony her from a parent's horse on the trail. An intermediate rider would be best suited to ride Tessa independently.

It should be noted that during her training, an old ligament issue arose in Tessa's right front leg. After PRP and shockwave therapy, Tessa spent some time off for rehabilitation. Tessa has since completed her rehabilitation, and while it did improve her overall comfort, she still displays occasional lameness, particularly when worked in an arena with deeper footing.

We have found that Tessa is most comfortable, and happiest, riding outside. She is brave and sure-footed on the trails. She's a lady on a mission and occasionally has opinions about stopping to enjoy the scenery! We have also hauled Tessa off property for a five-mile trail ride where she encountered a train passing in the distance, a river, multiple creek crossings, unfamiliar horses, and heavy farm equipment. She handled every new experience with confidence and took it all in stride. In the days following the ride, we monitored her comfort level and she remained comfortable, reinforcing our belief that deeper arena footing is what affects her the most.
