Description: I am a neutered male, bay Arabian.
Weight: I weigh approximately 730.00 lbs.
Age: The shelter staff think I am about 14 years old.
More Info: I have been at the shelter since Mar 13, 2024.
Bio: Arlo is a bay Arabian who came to us underweight and neglected. He was hungry and nervous upon his arrival. We gave him a nice clean stall with a deep sawdust floor and started on his rehabilitation with a strict refeeding schedule. Slowly but surely, Arlo began to gain weight. He started to enjoy his daily routine and before we knew it, he was healthy and ready to be evaluated!
Upon evaluation, we found that Arlo had no previous training under saddle. He was, however, very intelligent and picked up on his groundwork quite quickly. Arlo was, and still is, a personable boy who had lots of potential for the right person. Our groundwork trainer believed he would make an exceptional liberty horse.
We call Arlo a "Haflinger in an Arabian suit" because the man is the chillest Arabian we’ve ever met. On the lazier side, Arlo doesn’t want to work harder than he has to, but he’s thoughtful and hasn’t shown any signs of being flighty. He ground drives like a pro and wears tack, including a bridle (though he hasn’t been asked to do anything with it apart from flex). Since beginning his training, Arlo now walks and trots under saddle in the arena. He is very confident at the walk, has good brakes, and is learning to move off leg. His confidence could be improved at the trot. True to his personality, Arlo continues to be sensible, calm, and relatively unfazed by most things. While he is progressing well, we believe he will thrive best as a trail horse. Due to arthritis in his hind end, deep arena footing and repetitive circles can be difficult for him, but he seems to do very well on hills and natural dirt or grass terrain.
Arlo is just pleasant to be around. He’s got the perfect balance of friendliness and personal boundaries. He’s often the first to greet you in the pasture, even while in full work, and genuinely enjoys spending time with his human friends. He is currently living with one mare and several geldings. In this setting, he is dominant but not unbearable. He still gets along with the other geldings in his pasture, but definitely enjoys the company of mares. Arlo would still likely do best in a home with either all geldings or all mares, as he can be a bit on the "studly" side when turned out with both.
Because Arlo is still green under saddle, he will do best with a confident intermediate rider working alongside a trainer or with an adopter who has experience bringing along green horses. With continued education and miles on the trail, we think he has a bright future ahead of him.
When in work, this boy is thoughtful and calm. We can't wait to see where life takes him!
