The staff at the OHS call me a Co-pilot! Co-pilots thrive on being an involved family member, and will likely want to spend a good chunk of their time with you playing, chatting, training, and snoozing. They can handle alone time if you give them enough to do, and their favourite independent activities usually include exploring tunnels, perching by the window, playing with novel toys, and cozying up for a nap. But be ready, because these social kitties will be waiting for you! If you're having guests over, you might find your Co-pilot at your side acting as your official greeter. And if you're working around the house a Co-pilot might just want to help - keep an eye on your keyboard! Co-pilots may also be good candidates for harness training and leash walks outdoors. After living with a Co-pilot, you'll wonder how you ever managed without one.
I am FIV Positive.
FIV, or feline immunodeficiency virus, is a lentivirus or slow virus. With proper care, FIV-positive cats can live healthy lives for many years and may eventually die from a cause unrelated to FIV. There is no cure for FIV, and cats with FIV are at risk of other illnesses, including cancer from a weakened immune system. It is likely that a cat with FIV will have a shorter life expectancy than a non-FIV-infected cat and will have higher than typical general veterinary expenses.
The Ottawa Humane Society recommends that all cats be kept indoors; this is particularly important with FIV-positive cats to prevent the transmission of FIV to other cats and to prevent exposure to other diseases. FIV is primarily transmitted through deep bite wounds. Because the potential is high for cat fights when introducing new cats into a home with existing cats, FIV-positive cats or FIV-exposed cats will not be adopted into homes with FIV-negative cats to prevent infection of non-infected cats. Ideally, FIV-positive cats should not be housed with other FIV positive cats as an immune-suppressed cat can serve as an amplifier for infectious agents. Your veterinarian may recommend confirmatory blood testing and baseline blood and urine testing, as well as twice-yearly veterinary exams, possibly with annual blood work and urinalysis.
For the safety of both cat and human, it is not recommended that FIV-positive cats be adopted to a home with an immune-suppressed owner. We recommend that you speak to your physician to review any risk factors for zoonotic (animal to human) disease transmissmission.
