About: Meet Conchita, a sweet and petite 19-pound Heeler mix looking for her forever family. While she can initially be a little shy when meeting new people, she warms up very quickly and shows off her wonderfully calm, affectionate nature. She loves giving soft kisses, knows how to sit when asked, and takes treats with the absolute softest mouth. In shelter playgroups, Conchita has been a total star—she is remarkably social, initiates and engages in play naturally, and has been described as a perfect playmate for other dogs.
Before coming to us, Conchita was involved in a bite incident while running at large alongside another dog who instigated a conflict with a smaller pet. When that pet’s owner picked up their dog, Conchita jumped up and bit the owner once on the arm. Given her baseline docile demeanor, our team believes her reaction was heavily influenced by the high stress and excitement created by her running partner in that moment.
Conchita is now searching for a peaceful, loving home with a responsible owner who will keep her safe, secure, and well-managed. In a calm environment where she won't be exposed to overwhelming situations, this sweet and play-loving girl will thrive and have every opportunity to be the devoted companion we know she can be.
Available for adoption only through PACC.
Interested parties:
Must visit PACC before the COB Sunday October 18th, 2026 deadline to meet with a counselor who will review notes and introduce you to the dog to ensure that it’s a good fit. Some dogs may also require an introduction to any dogs they may potentially live with.
Home Management Plan
Bite History:
• Incident Details: Moderate single bite to arm while at large, person was holding smaller dog.
Possible Prey Drive:
• Conchita may display chasing behaviors or pull toward small animals such as cats, rabbits, or wildlife while on walks. A confident, strong handler is recommended for safe management.
• Prey drive can be instinctual, breed-related, or a learned behavior reinforced by past experiences.
• Training and Management: Use a secure martingale collar or properly fitted harness during walks. Avoid off-leash areas where small animals may be present.
Shy/Nervous:
• Decompression Period: Allow Conchita ample time and space to settle into their new environment. Pushing interactions too soon can increase stress and delay progress.
• No Forced Handling: Avoid handling that Conchita does not initiate or consent to. Let them approach on their own terms. Use high value treats, calm praise, and gentle encouragement to build trust.
• Building Affection: They may take time to show affection or seek attention. Every dog adjusts at their own pace - patience and consistency are key to helping them feel secure.
• Confident Dog Recommended: They may benefit from living with a calm, confident dog who can model appropriate behavior and help build trust in new environments.
