Bio: CENSUS DEADLINE - Monday Oct. 5th
Available for Adoption-Only through PACC
Smokey is a cute, but sensitive boy who needs a patient person willing to give him time to feel comfortable. The shelter has been stressful for him, but once he is out of his kennel and given some space, he walks nicely and can settle in with a calm handler. He does not like to be pet or cuddled and will need to build trust at his own pace.
Smokey is very nervous around new people and should not be pushed for handling or affection until he is comfortable and has developed a relationship with his new family. A quiet, predictable home will be important, along with an adopter who understands the value of giving a nervous dog space and allowing him to approach on his own terms.
Smokey also has separation and escape concerns and has tried to leave the yard when his people are gone. He will need secure containment and careful supervision, and he will need to be crate trained. He should be safely crated whenever he cannot be directly supervised, including when his family leaves the home as well as at bedtime. A gradual approach to alone time, along with enrichment and a consistent routine, will help him settle.
Smokey is looking for someone who can see past his nerves and give him the time he needs to come out of his shell. He will do best in an adult home without children where he can decompress, build trust, and feel safe. With patience and consistency, Smokey may be able to show the sweet, gentle side his previous family knew.
