Bio: Shelter volunteers may end up walking hundreds of dogs each year, and every dog has a slightly different style. Different volunteers like walking different dogs; some enjoy walking with the bouncy ones who will stop for pets and kisses along the way, others enjoy running with the high energy pups. But I’ll let you in on a secret- most of us really like taking out the “easy” walkers- the ones who don’t yank or pull but walk politely by our side. If you’re looking for a walking partner who will stick close and match your speed, look no further than Sable! Her barky kennel presence is completely opposite of her behavior once she’s out for a walk. Here’s what some of her volunteer friends have said:

“Sable is such a gentle girl! She is incredibly nervous when you first meet her. She allows for easy leashing, however, just take it slow and she's easy peasy. Sable is such a great walker. She walks a tad slow but right by your side. She's extremely attentive, checking in on you. Sable seems to perk up so much when she's on a walk exploring. She would be a perfect companion for someone looking for a mellow sweet senior.”

“If I could pick only one dog to walk in the shelter, it would be Sable! She is an absolute perfect walker!! If you want to go slow, she will walk slowly on a loose leash next to you, if you pick up the pace, she will match you. She had a loose leash the entire time we walked together. Her entire demeanor changed when we headed out for a walk! She had a smile on her face the whole time and really seemed in her element! While she’s still not super comfortable with a lot of touch, she’s an absolute dream to spend time with if you’re looking for a mellow companion!”

“I seem to gravitate towards the grouchy dogs who have a tough exterior but are usually just scared and unsure in the stressful shelter. I think Sable is one of those dogs. The first couple times I would take her to a yard where she'd avoid me at all costs. Recently in the yard, I sat on the ground and watched her pace, but she would circle very close to me, so I grabbed her leash during one of the passes and tried petting her. She didn't pull away, in fact, she came closer to me, sniffing and laying her head lower as I rubbed her face. It didn't last too long but I think it showed potential to crack that rough exterior. She's an anxious gal who needs to feel safe and I hope I can help her on her journey to feeling safer. “

Sable has been independent when meeting other dogs in playgroup and would like to meet any resident dogs before heading home to ensure a good fit. She’s looking for a caring, patient family who will give her a safe home where she can decompress from shelter life and get the love and stability she deserves. Please ask about Sable today!
