About:
Meet Finnegan, the very handsome Border Collie and Australian Kelpie mix who is ready to fill the missing piece in your life! This bright, active dog has been acing his "report cards" during numerous day trips outside the shelter, proving he's ready to transition into a wonderful home.
As a mix of two highly intelligent working breeds, Finnegan is a very smart and active dog who would thrive in a home committed to keeping his mind and body busy. He would greatly benefit from engaging enrichment activities like puzzle toys, sniff walks, and frozen Kongs to keep his brilliant mind satisfied. Finnegan is the perfect blend of energetic athlete and laid-back companion. He loves the outdoors, makes an excellent hiking partner, and enjoys being an active part of the family, often following his people around the house.
Yet, when the day is done, he can be quite the mellow and laid-back couch potato! In social settings, Finnegan is an enthusiastic participant in playgroups, showing himself to be an energetic and social guy who loves interacting with other dogs. He is also housebroken and has successfully met and interacted with children of several different ages, doing very well with them.
Despite his wonderful qualities, Finnegan has begun to show signs of decline while living in the shelter environment. He truly needs and deserves a break from the stress of kennel life to feel completely secure and happy again. Finnegan is searching for a family ready to commit to his active needs and offer him the stable, loving sanctuary where his exceptional personality can truly shine. Don't wait—this loyal, smart, and playful guy is ready to embark on his next adventure with you!
Available for foster care (2+ weeks) or adoption through PACC.
Interested parties:
Must visit PACC before the Close of business Saturday November 15th deadline to meet with a counselor who will review notes and introduce you to the dog to ensure that it’s a good fit. Some dogs may also require an introduction to any dogs they may potentially live with.
Home Management Plan
1) High Drive Behavior:
• Finnegan displays high-drive behaviors such as high puppy energy.
• Energy Management: High-drive dogs require constant mental and physical enrichment to prevent frustration and unwanted behaviors.
• Enrichment Ideas: Provide structured outlets such as training sessions, puzzle feeders, scent games, agility, or other interactive activities that challenge both mind and body.
• Handler Expectations: These dogs thrive with clear structure, consistency and purpose. Without appropriate outlets, they may develop destructive or attention-seeking behaviors.
2) Children Caution:
Finnegan has a habit of getting a little too excited and will sometimes knock down children. He's incredibly sweet towards them but he's not fully aware of his size and will knock children down on accident.
• Supervision Required: Children should never be left alone with any dog. Always monitor interactions closely to ensure safety for both the child and Finnegan.
• Appropriate Interaction: Roughhousing, grabbing, hugging, or sudden movements can cause stress or fear, potentially leading to defensive behaviors. Teach children to interact calmly and respectfully.
• Safe Space: Provide them with a designated area (such as a crate or quiet room) where they can retreat when they need space. Crate training his highly recommended.
• Leash Management: Keep a dragline attached for at least two weeks, or until they are fully comfortable around children. This allows safe, low-stress handling if intervention is needed.
