Bio: If you’ve got a sweet tooth, then head on down to PACC! Xena, who used to go by the very apt name of Azucar, is a gentle, sensitive little lady who needs a little sweetness in her own life. This loving girl is diabetic and needs twice daily injections. She’s looking for a special family who will give her a bit of extra care, and in return, Xena will give you her whole heart!
In a former home Xena did well with kids, small and large dogs, and even cats! She was well- behaved when left home alone, was house trained, and was described as an affectionate girl who loves to be close to her people.
Here's what one volunteer at the shelter said:
“Xena was calm and quiet in her kennel and was easy to leash. She walked politely to a yard where she explored. She’s slightly shy but approached and really appreciated gentle affection and pets. In fact, I’d say that she soaks love up like a sponge! If you take things slow with her, Xena will melt into you and will melt your heart in the process. She really deserves loving family.”
In foster home :
-Is she house trained?
Yes, however, she has diabetes and needs to be let out more often than other pups. I crate her at night.
- Good with other dogs?
Yes
-Good with cats
Yes, if they don’t run.
-Good with kids
Haven’t had the occasion but I wouldn’t see why not.
-Details
Xena is one of the smartest dogs I’ve known. She responds to instructions very well. Learns quickly. Loves people. Is friendly. Great on the leash, does not pull. At this point, she walks behind me. I would consider her (almost) a perfect pet, EXCEPT, she has diabetes and needs to have an insulin shots 2Xs daily. 12 hours a part.
-History
She arrived at the shelter for the 2nd time in 2 years. The first surrender she weighed 55 lbs. The second surrender was Dec. of 2025 weighing 37 pounds. Her people brought her in because they could not afford her medical care. Her weight decline ,I am told and read, is because of her illness.
Xena is a pup that wants to please. She will correct her behavior if you tell her no. As in, she is very food driven. When getting her dinner ready and she and my dog are side by side, she will growl and lift her lip to the other dog. When I say no in a strong voice, she instantly stops the behavior.
I crate her at night because of the inability to last all night without peeing. However, when in the crate, she seems to be able last the night. If I stay in bed longer than normal, she will wimper to be let out. When it’s time to go in the crate I will say,”Xena, go to bed.” She runs right into her crate. I give her a treat. It only took her twice to learn that behavior.
She is a happy dog. Gives me great tail wags in the morning and when I come home, Excited to see me. Still a bit head shy. She has to come to you, you cant go to her as she will back away. If you call her to you, she will come. As of 2/15/26 I have had her for 4 weeks. I can start to see her sweet nature and her personality come out but she still is very shy.
I went out of the front door the other day and didnt realize she walked out behind me. I was working in the yard and turned around and there was Xena. She just wants to be with her people. Even my own dog will wander away, she was right behind me.
She will be such a wonderful companion for someone. You want company and love, Xena is your pup. However, her medical care will probably be expensive. That needs to be understood, as well as being where you need to be for her insulin shots. I am an early riser and early to bed so my 8am and 8 pm schedule works well.
Xena has been independent and tolerant when meeting other dogs in playgroup. If you can spoil this girl like she deserves, ask to meet Xena today!!
