Located At: Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter - Santa Cruz
Description: Staff named me Kelsey* and I am an unaltered female, tricolor and black Australian Cattle Dog.
Age: The shelter staff think I am about 2 years old.
More Info: I have been at the shelter since Jul 10, 2026.
You may adopt me as soon as I am spayed or neutered!
Meet Kelsey, the tricolor Australian Cattle dog. Kelsey came to the Shelter as a stray so we don’t know much about her life beforehand. Since her arrival, she has been quiet, polite and easy to leash up to go play in the yard. She keeps a very tidy kennel so she may be showing signs of being house trained. Adopters should still anticipate some accidents in the transition as they learn to communicate with Kelsey on when she has to go! Staff have observed that Kelsey has a bit of prey drive – fixating on small animals like squirrels and having trouble disengaging. A home with small animals such as cats or rabbits will likely not be a great fit for this gal. Adopters should be mindful when they are out walking her as well as she may gravitate towards interacting with wildlife. Keeping her on leash will be a key management to ensure that everyone stays safe. Typical to the breed, Kelsey will need an active, engaging adopter that will enrich her day mentally and physically. Any resident dogs are recommended to meet at the Shelter prior to adoption.
Kelsey is available for preadoption. Come meet her, fall in love and take her home after her spay surgery.
The Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter Foundation is now offering “Pawsitivity Bucks” with every dog adoption. This $200 training voucher is a way for newly adopted canines and their guardians to connect with local positive reinforcement based behavior consultants and get their relationship started off on the right paw!
Please note: Our Santa Cruz location’s Shelter hours are 11-6pm, 7 days a week! Although clients can walk through and see any animals in their kennels during open hours, we end “meet and greets” (aka meeting an animal out of the kennel) at 4:30pm every day. If you’d like to meet an animal out of the kennel, please arrive before 4:00pm to allow for time to discuss individual animals and meet them
