Status: Needs Rescue – Urgent
This long-stay girl has been at the shelter for 171 days and is now showing signs of kennel stress and behavioral decline due to prolonged housing and overstimulation.
In kennel, she displays alarm barking, jumping, and occasional growling or lunging—especially around feeding time, likely related to barrier reactivity or resource guarding. However, outside her kennel, her joyful and social personality shines through.
She loves people, is a regular in dog playgroups, and enjoys every kind of toy—especially fetch and splashing in the kiddie pool. She's food- and toy-motivated, knows “sit,” “down,” and “paw,” and learns quickly. Affectionate and playful, she’ll happily snuggle next to you once she’s had a chance to settle. While she can get a bit mouthy when overexcited, it’s easily managed with redirection and consistency.
She has shown some fence reactivity to other dogs, so slow introductions with new friends.
This sweet and intelligent girl is ready to thrive in a home that gives her structure, enrichment, and love. She’s struggling in the shelter—but in the right environment, she’ll make an incredible companion.

What did we do on today’s adventure:
Today I got to go on an extra special adventure - I went swimming in a real pool! I was so excited to get out I bounded right into the car, during the ride I had to wiggle my way up to the front seat because riding shotgun is obviously the best spot. When we got to the pool, I was thrilled because I love splashing around in the kiddie pools at the shelter, but this was so much bigger! I'm a confident girl, so it didn't take much encouragement for me to hop in. I'll admit I was a little surprised when my feet didn't touch the ground and my head went under water for a second - that was definitely new! But it didn't take me long to figure out this whole swimming thing, and soon I was diving in like I'd been doing it my whole life. The absolute best part was fetching the toys my friend threw in the pool for me - I could have done that all day! I felt like such a champion by the end, and I was definitely ready for a good nap on the car ride home.
What should potential adopters know about me:
Cherina is a young, energetic Malinois mix who thrives on activity and mental stimulation. She's incredibly smart and eager to learn, with strong food and toy motivation. Cherina forms deep, loyal bonds with her handlers and is very people-focused, always ready to work and play with her favorite humans. She's a confident girl who loves fetch and water activities - perfect for active families who enjoy outdoor adventures. Swimming combined with fetch is an excellent way to tire out this high-energy girl in a fun and engaging way. At the shelter, Cherina is a star in doggie playgroup and gets along wonderfully with other dogs, making her an ideal candidate for a multi-dog household where she can have playmates to match her energy level. Cherina would thrive with an active adopter who can provide plenty of physical exercise, mental challenges, and structured activities. She's the perfect companion for someone looking for an intelligent, loyal, and adventurous four-legged partner who's ready for any challenge life throws their way.

Today I: was soooo excited to go on my Tails & Trails adventure I couldn’t stand still! Then I got to go on a car ride, I stuck my head out the window to enjoy all the sights and smells, I also wanted to ride shotgun, but my walker said I had to stay in the back. When we got to the park, I got to sniff so many great smells and I got lots of treats for showing off my sit, down, and paw. It was hot out, so we took lots of breaks to enjoy the day and I got lots of head and butt scratches. Finally, after our walk I got a pup cup – yum!
Notes on from my walker: Cherina is a young Malinois mix and has many breed typical traits – she is energetic, driven, and incredibly smart (she can also be a bit mouthy as is typical of many Malinois). She already knows sit, down, and paw – she is food and toy motivated making her very trainable, this combined with her intelligence means she could easily learn many commands. She does pull a bit but overall is good on lead and checks in with her walker frequently. She is unreactive to other people, bikes, and dogs on the trail (though she is quite interested in critters). She is affectionate and snuggled up for scratches and attention during our breaks. At the shelter Cherina loves fetch and playing in the pool, she is also a playgroup regular and gets along with other dogs. Cherina is a wonderful dog and will make a great companion to someone who can provide the mental and physical stimulation she needs.

Doggy Day Out Report
Today I: went on my first doggie day out! I was sooooo excited and just wanted to go, go, go! I hopped in the car all by myself and explored everything I could in the back seat (I was thankful my friend put some toys in the back for me to play with). When we got to the park I was excited to stretch my legs and get some exercise, and to sniff all the new smells. Even though I was excited to walk and sniff I still made sure to check in with my friend often. I showed off my sit for lots of yummy treats and got lots of compliments on the trail about what a pretty girl I am.
Three Words to Describe Me are: Active, Intelligent, Attentive
Notes from My Walker: Cherina is a very energetic girl, it did take a few minutes to get her leashed up as she was very excited and wiggly. She has no problem getting in the car but make sure you don’t have anything in the back you don’t want her to get into as she will explore every inch of the car she can haha. I recommend having some toys in the back for her as she is very toy motivated and likes to have something to chew on. She was excited to get walking and she does pull but not unmanageably. Despite her excitement to be out and sniffing she checks in with her walker very frequently and is very attentive to you. She is extremely smart, she knows sit and down, and is very food/toy motivated - with consistent training she could learn many commands. When we stopped for a break she was very affectionate, wanting to snuggle up and get pets, she can get a little mouthy when petting but she is only a year old and still has some puppy mouthiness and jumpiness. Overall Cherina is an extremely intelligent and motivated dog, she needs a lot of mental and physical stimulation in her day to day life but she has the potential to be a very talented girl.
