Summary of Behavior:
Pollo presents as a highly social, affiliative, and environmentally engaged dog, but demonstrates severe chronic kennel stress and significant dog-directed overarousal that escalate in stimulating environments. His FAS scores have ranged from 1–3 outside of the kennel, where he is often playful, people-oriented, and highly interactive with handlers.
Outside of the kennel, Pollo readily engages with staff, solicits attention, enjoys toys and enrichment, and is strongly motivated by treats. He has tolerated routine handling, muzzle conditioning, vaccine administration, and leash handling without significant concern. Volunteers and staff describe him as energetic, playful, and affectionate with people, frequently checking in with handlers and displaying loose, social body language in yards and low-pressure settings.
In the kennel environment, however, Pollo consistently exhibits extreme stress behaviors including persistent barking, spinning, pacing, flipping in kennel, body slamming kennel doors and walls, fence fighting, and jumping high enough to nearly hit the kennel roof. Despite interventions including visual barriers, anxiolytic medication, low-traffic housing, enrichment plans, and playgroup participation, his kennel stress has remained severe and persistent, significantly impacting both his welfare and the surrounding kennel environment.
Pollo also demonstrates substantial dog-directed overarousal and reactivity. He becomes highly fixated on other dogs, pulling strongly toward them, barking, fence fighting, and struggling to disengage once aroused. During dog-to-dog interactions, he escalated to lunging, jumping/slamming into another dog, and vocalizing when allowed direct greetings, despite initially being redirectable at distance with treats.
Overall, Pollo demonstrates strong affiliative behavior toward humans but significant kennel deterioration and poor impulse control around other dogs. Based on these observations, Pollo has been assessed as HIGH RISK for dog-to-dog interactions (Y2/Y3 designation; Likelihood: Likely | Consequence: Considerable). His Quality of Life Assessment is currently considered “Poor” due to the severity and persistence of his kennel stress behaviors.
Pollo has been placed on FINAL status due to chronic kennel deterioration and ongoing welfare concerns. He is in need of urgent adoption or rescue placement with an experienced handler capable of managing a large, high-energy dog with significant dog reactivity and overarousal.
Path Forward: Rescue or adopter must commit and *pull* Pollo by 5 PM on 06/08/2026, or Pollo will be humanely euthanized. Rescue or adopter will also need to have a waiver signed and submitted prior to leaving with the dog.
****POLLO IS NOT AVAILABLE FOR FOSTER. ADOPTION OR RESCUE ONLY****
EXTENSION REQUEST PROCESS:
A Rescue Group (RG) may request an extension of an animal’s Needs Rescue Final Date no later than 10:00 a.m. on the noted ‘final date’ via email to the SJRescue@sanjoseca.gov with a cc to a Division Manager or Shelter Operations Supervisor.
Extension requests must be from the RG interested in in the animal, include specific information as to delays in rescue commitment, specific care arrangements, or other time-based mitigating factors that warrant an extension. A one-time extension up to 72-hour may be granted to accommodate RG, but are not guaranteed based on capacity or condition or other constraints.Meet Pollo, The American Muscle Muppet (Extra-strong edition)!
This muppet is best enjoyed with a harness and a sense of humor
Pollo is a large, strong (~75 lb) and energetic boy who needs an experienced, confident handler. He’s eager to get out and explore but pulls hard on leash, so a harness is required—once harnessed, he does better on calm, sniffy walks in low-traffic areas.
In the kennel, Pollo can be noisy and over-stimulated when there’s lots of activity, but he settles when things are quieter. He may alarm bark at the front of his kennel yet happily comes out once he sees the leash. With people, he’s more independent than cuddly—he tolerates handling well and was cooperative for veterinary care, though he can be sensitive during harnessing with some individuals.
Pollo is very interested in other dogs and can become over-aroused (jumping, fence running, barking), but he is not aggressive. Due to his rowdy play-style, 'hormonal' tendancies, he’s currently not in playgroup and may do best as an only dog or with another dog who can give appropriate corrections.
Pollo isn’t big on toys or treats, but he knows “sit,” is easy to return to his kennel, and has lots of personality. With structure, patience, and the right setup, Pollo could thrive as a loyal companion for someone who can match his strength and energy.

What I did today:
I jumped in the car for a fun ride to the park, loving every second with my head out the window soaking up the breeze! At the park I got to run and play with toys to burn off some energy before heading out for a long trail walk. I enjoyed taking in all the new smells and sights and at the end of our walk I got a pupcup – yum!
What to know about this dog:
• Energetic and strong — pulls moderately on leash and would thrive with continued leash training
• Strong prey drive — not suitable for a home with cats
• Friendly, affectionate, and highly treat-motivated — knows "sit" and eager to learn more
• Would do best in an active home that can provide plenty of exercise, structure, and training
Three words to describe me:
Energetic, Friendly, Playful
