Located At: San Jose Animal Care Center
Description: My name is Don Julio.
I am a neutered male, brindle-bn and white Pit Bull Terrier.

Age: The shelter staff think I am about 2 years and 7 months old.
More Info: I have been at the shelter since Feb 25, 2025.
08/22/25 Dog placed on Needs Rescue Urgent status due to significant behavioral decline related to kennel stress. Dog initially presented with alarm barking, raised hackles, and targeting bites at kennel bars. Over time, kennel presence has deteriorated further—frequent barking, jumping on kennel door, and showing teeth when approached. Once removed from the kennel, behavior improves. Dog is leashable, allows full handling, and demonstrates improved demeanor away from the high-stress shelter environment. However, continues to display reactivity to other dogs, including fence fighting in the courtyard. No issues reported with returning to kennel post-interaction. Behavioral pattern is consistent with kennel-induced stress and is not improving with time. Dog remains manageable and affiliative outside of the kennel setting, suggesting potential for behavioral improvement in a more stable, lower-stress environment. Rescue placement is urgently needed to prevent further decline and to provide behaviorally appropriate support. Not thriving in current shelter conditions.

What did we do on today’s adventure:
Today was pawsitively amazing. My human buddy came to take me on an adventure, and let me tell you, I was READY. They got me all hooked up in no time — I didn’t even have to wiggle too much. I could tell right away: this was gonna be a good one. We went to this magical place called Hellyer Industrial Park. I’ve got a bit of a thing with other dogs (I like my space, okay?), so this place was perfect. Quiet, open, and full of sniffable mysteries. We walked FOUR MILES. A few dogs passed by, but my human was a total pro — we just danced around them like it was no big deal. Now, let’s talk about the real fun: PLUSHIES. Ohhh yes. I got to play tug and shake and toss and tug again. I could tug forever. My human said I was “relentless.” I think that’s a compliment? And just when I thought the day couldn’t get better — PUP CUP. Then we took a long drive back, windows down, breeze in my fur, plushie in my mouth. Best. Day. Ever.

What should potential adopters know about me:
Today I had the pleasure of walking Don Julio, and he was an absolute sweetheart from the moment I clipped on his leash. Getting him geared up was a breeze — he was calm, cooperative, and clearly excited for the adventure ahead. We headed to Hellyer Industrial Park, a quieter spot that gave us plenty of space to move without too many dog distractions. Don Julio has some reactivity to other dogs, so this location was ideal. We encountered a few dogs along the way, but with some thoughtful navigation and distance, he handled it really well. I was impressed by how responsive and manageable he was throughout. We covered about 4 miles, and Don Julio was in his element — sniffing everything, taking in the world, and enjoying the journey. He’s got a curious, engaged energy that makes walks with him feel like a shared exploration. After the walk, we had some playtime with plushies and tug toys — his absolute favorites. He didn’t want to stop! He’s got a playful, goofy side that really shines when he’s comfortable. To wrap up our outing, we grabbed a pup cup and took a long, relaxing drive back. He settled in nicely, clearly content after a full day of activity and enrichment. Don Julio would thrive in a home where he’s the only dog, with patient and active guardians who can give him the structure, exercise, and love he deserves. He’s got so much potential and so much heart.

Three words to describe me:
Sweet, goofy, adventurous
