****ZAZU (A1401266) has been placed on FINAL 08/10/26****

**Zazu has been extended. He must be pulled prior to 5:00PM on 08/28/26 or he will be humanely euthanized.**

He must be pulled prior to 5:00 PM on 08/24/26 or he will be humanely euthanized.**

Zazu initially displayed appropriate kennel behavior. Staff noted he remained quiet when approached, greeted people from the front of the kennel with a low tail wag, and maintained good kennel presence with all four feet on the ground. During early observations, he accepted attention calmly and investigated treats without displaying concerning behavior.

Over the course of his shelter stay, however, Zazu demonstrated a marked and progressive deterioration in kennel behavior. Staff consistently documented escalating fear, anxiety, and stress while confined, including charging the kennel front, body slamming the kennel door, lunging, baring teeth, alarm barking, stiff body posture, whale eye, hackles raised, spinning, and repeated attempts to bite through the kennel door. His behavior continued to worsen despite behavioral intervention, with multiple observations documenting FAS Levels 4–5.

Outside of the kennel, Zazu presents as a very friendly, social, and affiliative dog. He is easy to engage with once removed from the kennel environment, readily seeks attention from handlers, and displays appropriate social behavior with people. Zazu has also done well in dog introductions and engaged in play.

Overall, Zazu has experienced a severe decline in behavioral health while housed in the shelter, with chronic kennel-related fear, anxiety, and stress progressing despite behavioral medication. At the same time, he continues to demonstrate that outside of the kennel he is a friendly, affiliative dog capable of appropriate interactions with people and select canine companions.
When a dog remains in a state of severe fear, anxiety, and stress (FAS) despite reasonable efforts to reduce their stress and provide behavioral support, continuing to keep them in a shelter environment may no longer be humane.

**Path Forward:** Rescue partners must commit to and pull Zazu by **5:00 PM on 08/24/26**, or Zazu will be humanely euthanized.

****ZAZU IS AVAILABLE FOR RESCUE OR ADOPTER****

**EXTENSION REQUEST PROCESS:**
A Rescue Group (RG) may request an extension of an animal's Needs Rescue Final Date no later than **10:00 a.m. on the noted final date** via email to SJRescue@sanjoseca.gov with a cc to a Division Manager or Shelter Operations Supervisor.

Looking for the perfect right hand man? Zazu is your guy!

Zazu is a 6 year-old that came to our shelter in early May. He is a smart boy that loves to go for his daily walks. Zazu has not been thoroughly dog tested, but he has been seen playing wiht his buddy Zebra in the yard. Zazu has shown signs of kennel stress and barrier reactivity while in the kennel. His "Fear, Anxiety, Stress" score, or FAS, was low when he first came to the shelter but has since been noted to be consistantly high. Although, his barrier reactivity may be kennel specific because Zazu is noted to not react to dogs walking by his yard when he is outside.

Zazu is not thriving in the shelter and is waiting for someone to adopt him. Will you be that person?
