*New Update* 10/05/2026

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Brian has been placed on FINAL as of 9/30/2026.
He must be pulled by 5:00 PM on 10/9/2026, or he will be humanely euthanized. He has been on urgent needs rescue since 7/10/26.
Brian has shown a significant and sustained decline while housed in the shelter. His Fear, Anxiety, and Stress (FAS) has repeatedly been documented at 3-5, and his quality of life has been rated poor to very poor. In his kennel, he has been observed charging, spinning, jumping to the top, and baring his teeth. Medication provided improvement at times, but he regressed, showing he continues to struggle in the shelter setting.
Outside the kennel, Brian can engage well with people. He is easy to leash, comes when called, knows sit, enjoys treats and toys, and has allowed staff interaction. However, he has also shown leash biting, intense play, difficulty disengaging from other dogs, and barrier reactivity. With another dog, he became vocal, pushy, and hackled, focused intensely on one dog, chewed his ear, stood over him, and was difficult to redirect verbally. He has also jumped toward a handler's hand while being leashed.
Brian's interactions with other dogs should be carefully managed by experienced handlers.
Brian is available for rescue or adoption.
A rescue partner or adopter must commit to and pull Brian by 5:00 PM on 10/9/2026, or he will be humanely euthanized. A waiver will also need to be signed.
EXTENSION REQUEST PROCESS
A Rescue Group (RG) may request an extension of an animal's Needs Rescue Final Date no later than 5:00 PM on the noted final date by emailing SJRescue@sanjoseca.gov, with a cc to a Division Manager or Shelter Operations Supervisor.

Meet Brian!
Brian is a young, playful, and energetic dog who is still learning how to navigate the world and manage his big enthusiasm. In the kennel, he can be vocal and frustrated, often barking when people approach, but he softens quickly with calm interaction and will come forward to take treats and engage once he feels comfortable. Outside of the kennel, Brian really comes to life—he is active, curious, and enjoys exploring his surroundings, playing, and interacting with people. He can get very excited during play and may jump or become vocal when trying to engage other dogs, but he is responsive to redirection and guidance from handlers. Brian is highly treat-motivated, knows “sit,” and enjoys being part of whatever is happening around him. He would thrive in an active home that can provide structure, exercise, and continued basic training as he grows into his best self.
