Koala has made BIG strides in the shelter and has had more confidence in recent weeks - he has approached handlers for pets and scratches and is far more eager to interact - even jumping into the laps of some of our staff members for handling.
He was castrated today, and had 2 severely diseased premolars, a broken canine, and 3 loose incisor teeth removed but is still in need of a full COHAT (with full mouth radiographs) to assess the root and crown health of remaining teeth and see what else may warrant extraction - this is recommended within the 1 year. All remaining teeth were scaled/polished at the time of his castration. Xrays were taken of his hips, knees and lower spine given his senior age. His hips and stifles look normal, and he has some spondylosis in his spine, and is on gabapentin for pain management and also for behavioral support. His skin has shown gradual improvement with medications!
Koala is still in need of an adopter looking for a senior pet OR a rescue - rescue or adopter should be prepared to seek follow-up dental care within 1 year of adoption/rescue for full mouth radiographs and any indicated extractions. They should also be prepared to provide ongoing care for his mild skin irritations and any pain management needed into his senior years for his spine.
Please help us give Koala a soft place to land in his golden years.

Koala is a senior chihuahua who is fearful in his communal room towards humans - he will low growl, turn head away, lip lick and avoid interaction; today (1 week on behavioral support medications) he was willing to come close enough to a technician to loop leash over, and walked well on leash towards medical ward, and we were able to perform basic physical exam; he tolerated touching his lips, pets to his head, stethoscope and palpation of belly.
On exam, Koala has a broken canine teeth and a few missing incisors, though full awake oral exam was not performed today due to his stress. He has a skin growth on his left side that is soft, moveable, and "skin-tag"-like in nature. He is intact with 1 small testicle and 1 more appropriately sized testicle. He has dermatitis (hairloss, thickening, scaliness) on his back and tail base and is being started on medications for his skin.
In need of urgent rescue who can provide dental care and ongoing care for his skin, and who can help him decompress out of shelter environment.

Eager to come out; easy to leash. Peed and pooped in the courtyard upon exiting the community room. Appears potty trained. Takes treats and allows handling, including being picked up. Appears more stressed in the community room.
