My Kennel Persona Is Totally Fake
Meet Tomato—More Sweet Pea Than Shelter Dog!

Hi, I'm Tomato! I'm a 3-year-old velvet bear, and I recently got to spend a night outside the shelter. Turns out, my kennel persona is mostly a facade. Once I settle in, I'm pure gold!

I'm housebroken, slept through the night on my dog bed (and the floor), and only woke once for a midnight potty break. I don't bark—seriously, not even when left alone for a bit. I love people and am wonderfully calm around traffic, bikes, other dogs, and busy sidewalks.

Now, a moving grocery cart? A parked wagon? A suspicious statue? TERRIFYING. I'll need a little reassurance when something looks weird. I also start walks with some zig-zaggy excitement and pulling, but give me time to decompress and I'll walk right beside you.

Cars are still a work in progress, but I eventually figured out the jumping-in part. I'm mostly respectful of cats, too, and easily redirectable when something outdoors catches my attention.

Baths? Let's just say I'd give them 2/10 stars. But balls? BALLS ARE LIFE. I love fetch and chewing, so durable toys are a must!

Tomato is a giant, goofy ball of sweetness. He’s an affectionate family dog waiting for a home that will help him practice his car hops, chuck a ball in the yard, and protect him from scary neighborhood statues.

Tomato recently met some social dogs at our shelter but he was avoidant and defensive.  He didn't seem ready for dog friends right now.  He may be ok living with a dog friend that respects his boundaries with slow introductions over a matter of days or weeks, or he may be happiest as an only dog.   Check out his playgroup video here:
