Here's a little from Pappy's foster:
We have had Pappy, aka Pappers or Papapotamus, for one week, and he is a very sweet older dog. He walks nicely on a leash without pulling, although he sometimes zigzags or walks in circles.
He has done very well with my other dogs: Cricket, a 15-pound, 6-year-old female; Jeff, a 12-pound, 4-year-old male; and Ruby, a 45-pound, 13-year-old female. He has not engaged in play, but he walks well with them and is comfortable being around them. Cricket snapped at him once, as she can sometimes be a grouchy little girl, and he responded very appropriately by simply walking away. He has not reacted to other dogs on walks; he notices them but ignores them.
Pappy does well in his crate overall. He may howl and sing the song of his beagle people for a little while at first, but then he settles and becomes quiet. He has not yet had free rein of the house or spent a great deal of time loose with our dogs; his interactions with them have been limited and supervised. He does not show much interest in toys.
He was a little anxious during the car ride and when he first arrived at the house, panting and following us around, but he has become more comfortable every day. He has not been around children. He can jump onto the couch and is happy to sit nearby and cuddle.
I am not yet sure whether he is fully house-trained. He has not eliminated in his crate, and he does go to the bathroom outside on walks and in the yard. He has lifted his leg and urinated in the house twice, which may have been marking, so he may need a little help with housetraining. Both times, I caught him and said “no”; he stopped, went outside to urinate, and received a treat to encourage appropriate behavior.
